Guidelines for accessing, using, and sharing wildlife conservation data from WRTI.

1. Introduction

The Wildlife Research & Training Institute (WRTI) is committed to promoting open access to wildlife conservation data while ensuring responsible use that supports conservation efforts in Kenya. This Data Policy outlines the principles, guidelines, and requirements for accessing and using data available through our platform.

2. Data Principles

Our data management is guided by the following principles:

  • Data Quality: Ensuring accuracy, reliability, and scientific integrity
  • Conservation Impact: Supporting evidence-based conservation decisions
  • Collaboration: Facilitating data sharing among conservation stakeholders

3. Data Classification

🟢 Open Access Data

Freely available for download and use:

  • General species distribution maps
  • Historical population trends
  • Published research findings
  • Ecosystem descriptions and maps
  • Conservation area information

🟡 Restricted Access Data

Available upon request with valid justification:

  • Detailed GPS coordinates of endangered species
  • Current population census raw data
  • Unpublished research data
  • High-resolution habitat maps
  • Genetic and biological samples information

🔴 Sensitive Data

Restricted to authorized personnel only:

  • Locations of critically endangered species
  • Anti-poaching operation data
  • Security-sensitive information
  • Personal data of researchers and staff

4. Data Licensing

Creative Commons License

Unless otherwise specified, open access data is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

This means you are free to:

  • Share — copy and redistribute the material
  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material

Under the following terms:

  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit to WRTI

5. Data Use Guidelines

6. Data Citation

Proper citation is required when using WRTI data. Please use the following format:
