Data Access Levels – Overview
To ensure responsible sharing and protection of sensitive wildlife information, data access within the database is structured into four distinct levels. Each level reflects the sensitivity of the data and the clearance required for access in accordance with the institute's Data Sharing Guidelines.
1. Public Data
Open AccessGeneral wildlife information openly accessible to the public for awareness, education, and non-sensitive research purposes. No special approval required.
Examples include:
- General species distribution maps
- Information in the public domain
- Published research papers
- Information on conservation areas
- Educational resources
2. Restricted Data
Registration RequiredAccess requires registration, review, and approval to ensure responsible use, appropriate attribution, and alignment with institutional policies or data-sharing agreements. The majority of WRTI data falls within this category.
3. Sensitive Data
Special Request RequiredInformation that could pose a risk to species or conservation efforts if misused. Access is granted only upon special request, with justification and clearance from designated authorities.
Examples include:
- GPS tracking data for endangered species
- Locations of breeding sites or nesting grounds
- Real-time animal movement data
- Anti-poaching intelligence reports
4. Confidential Data
Highest Clearance RequiredClassified and security-sensitive information reserved for authorized government bodies and designated partners. Access requires the highest level of clearance and is governed by legal or inter-agency agreements.
Examples include:
- Wildlife law enforcement records
- Data from covert security operations
- Inter-agency communications and protocols
- Strategic or operational planning documents
Important Note
All data requests are reviewed in accordance with the WRTI Data Sharing Policy. Processing times and approval requirements vary based on the sensitivity level of the requested data. For more information, please refer to the Data Sharing Guidelines.
